Steven Butterfield, Flickr co-founder, says here:
“Flickr was designed partly to market itself. There are a lot features, in place early on, that let people take their photo, upload it to Flickr and post them elsewhere, on their own Web site or their blog, which meant a lot of incoming links.”
What infinite wisdom lies in this sentence for those who are struggling with how to market their community platform…

Spot on! Something I would wish more people would realize. I think that applies even beyond community platforms & the web. Think about great products that have features build in that make it easy for us to add value to our life by making them useful outside their immediate natural environment -how the product becomes part of my highly mobile lifestyle in a very visible way. A setting where the product adds value to my personal brand, while at the same time I carry the product brand to new locations and spread the message, giving it the credibility when using the build in flexibility to make it fit my unique lifestyle.
…a bit of a stretch for an imagination and does not apply for every single product, but should be on the list when designing your product offerings. The flickr model is great example, since it makes a cristal clear example that you can think when working on your own offering.
