Here’s an extended presentation of my FLIRT model as presented at Talentum seminar 6th February 2008. Mostly in English despite the opening slide. There’s not much text on the slides so you need to be there the next time

Pirate Sheep

January 21st, 2008 · No Comments

Ok, so the original ‘piracy is a crime’ video is a prime example of advertising made by old people trying to tell young people what’s cool and what’s not - which is bound to fail. The spoof is a lot better, but it’s the individual recording artists that are the most creative of the lot:
“The […]

Platform as a marketing tool

January 15th, 2008 · 1 Comment

Steven Butterfield, Flickr co-founder, says here:
“Flickr was designed partly to market itself. There are a lot features, in place early on, that let people take their photo, upload it to Flickr and post them elsewhere, on their own Web site or their blog, which meant a lot of incoming links.”
What infinite wisdom lies in this […]

Wikia arrives, Google not likely to be shaken

January 3rd, 2008 · No Comments

According to Mashable, Wikia will be arriving shortly. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Wikia will not be a real threat to Google any time soon. Here’s a critical assessment as seen through my FLIRT model:
Focus
Area
I see Wikia definitely as a complementary, not a substitute service to algorithm-based search engines. I myself […]

On Free Books and Their Value

January 2nd, 2008 · No Comments

Chris Anderson had a post today on why you should give your book away for free. The idea of giving something for free in order to monetize it later indirectly is surely known to all those having read his book (is there anyone who hasn’t?).
I totally agree with Chris’ reasoning. I’m planning on writing a […]

Bye bye white christmas (and what luxury goods can do about it)

December 28th, 2007 · No Comments

Got on my bike today and shot off for a couple of hours of fresh air on the countryside (Helsinki is rather small and countryside starts a few kilometres east of where I live - which is basically downtown). A few kilometres into the ride, it struck me pretty hard: I’m living in the second […]

Crowdsourced marketing opportunity for Garfield

December 25th, 2007 · 2 Comments

Henri just wrote about the Garfield strip randomizer and its promise as a viral marketing tool for Garfield, should the company behind the brand be awake enough to utilize it. Just finishing up (yes, on xmas holiday, since it’s the only time available) my thesis on crowdsourcing, I felt compelled to comment on this one […]

TV channel Nelonen goes crowdsourcing for christmas

December 16th, 2007 · No Comments

Finnish TV channel Nelonen allows people to submit their own inserts for ad breaks between the shows in their christmas campaign. The best inserts are shown on TV, as could be expected. Sounds very neat indeed but in my opinion, the execution falls short of the promise. I’ll try to briefly analyze the competition through […]

Book review: The Laws of simplicity

December 9th, 2007 · No Comments

Stumbled upon a great book this week while visiting London: The Laws of Simplicity by John Maeda is a nice general introduction to designing for simplicity and value.
John has adopted a very down to earth and accessible approach in laying out his Ten Laws of Simplicity and illuminates the different contexts to which they apply […]

The FLIRT Model of Crowdsourcing: Creators, Critics, Connectors & Crowds

May 22nd, 2007 · 11 Comments

This is for the time being the last of my ‘FLIRT model for Crowdsourcing’ posts. If you don’t know anything about the FLIRT, is suggest you start here, and move up through Focus, Language Incentive, Rules and Tools.

The final ‘element’ in the FLIRT model is the C4, the different groups participating in crowdsourcing. This part […]
